Derek Smith trained as a ceramic designer and teacher in England. He migrated to Australia in 1956. In the 70s he was employed by Doulton Australia to design work for them to manufacturer. After a few years he set up Blackfriars Pottery in Chippendale, Sydney later moving to Tasmania.
