Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
I won this the other day and I'm very certain that Crown Lynn made it.
There was a sticker on the bottom of the bottle which I removed to see if there were any makers marks or stamps ..... and there was nothing to identify who made the bottle!
The sticker reads:
Lanol Hair Dressing
The new Carlyle Lanolin Hair Dressing free from greasy or sticky ingredients. Keeps the hair manageable. Special ingredients ensure healthy scalp & hair. A real grooming. Prepared in NZ for the House of Carlyle
College Hill, Auckland. Average contents approx 6ozs
The colour is the same maroon glaze that was used early on by the Specials Department.
On removing the sticker I could see that a clear glaze had been used to cover the whole bottle -
as the base was covered with the clear, just like the ginger jars and most of the early pieces that I have seen. The maroon glaze was applied over the clear and breaks on the decorative embellishments.
I thought this had a screw top lid and was looking forward to seeing this. But instead it has a cork with a prong from the lid that holds the cork in place. Alas the prong and the cork have parted company.
Photo to come.....

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
Any other thoughts?
The Crown Lynn maroon Seppelts bottle and the maroon ginger jar look the same colour in my opinion.
Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
I was delighted and excited to see three of these bottles on display at the Papakura Museum.
So they were made in Yellow, Green and Maroon at least ...
The green reminds me of the Seppelts and the Ginger Jar.
Haven't seen a Seppelts bottle in yellow, but have seen a Ginger Jar.

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
While checking out colours for ginger jar shards on the Portage Ceramic site I noticed what looks like the top portion of a Carlyle bottle ..... middle right in photo ....
is it just excitement or do you agree ?

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
Killing myself waiting to go to the Museum now, so that I can check it out beside the bottle that I have!
How odd that they don't confirm Crown Lynn as the Ginger Jar maker, as the Seppelts bottles and this Carlyle bottle are in the same glazes ....?

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
The Portage Ceramics Trust dates the photo for the shards as from 1940 to 1965 and I would go along with that as hair oil became a thing of the past when long hair became fashionable on men in the 1960's thanks to the Beatles influence
Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
I was extremely lucky to be invited to check out the possible Carlyle shard by appointment So exciting on all counts!
I will stick with the topic though and what a surprise to see that the shard was glazed brown! For some reason my brain had tricked me into thinking it was maroon too.
Take a look for yourself ...
The design is a match and the clay too which is very white. The shard is clear glazed on the inside.
In the same archive box was a maroon Ginger Jar lid shard which was a perfect glaze match with the bottle even though the shard looks darker in the pic!!
My personal conclusion is that Crown Lynn made the Carlyle bottles around the same time as the Ginger Jars ..... somewhere around the late 1940's to 1950's.
There is so much more cataloguing to do yet by the Portage .........

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
Great find and research Ev and I agree that looking at the shards it should have been clear that the ginger jars were made by C/L.

"Carlyle" bottle in brown with a different cap
Look what I got for $5 in Dargaville when I went over to pick up my accidental TM purchase of a CL swan. (I was playing auction roulette again.)
A "Carlyle" lanol bottle in brown glaze with a different cork cap.
I would not have looked twice at this if I had not been following this topic.
As it was, once was enough.
The base is not as rough as it looks:
it has a clean footring with domed centre.
I thought something was different and when I got back to our wifi I saw that the top was different from the others. I believe it is a ceramic cover on the cork but will not be able to confirm this til I take out my contact lens for a closeup look. The cork goes in and out easily enough and while the cap turns on it it does not threaten to come apart. The colour of the cap is a little different but I have no reason to think it is not original at this point.
This bottle is probably the brown of the shard, above; maybe lighter in colour but even so could be the same glaze.
I must say I prefer the coloured ones but am nevertheless very happy with my rare find.

Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
Notice that your one has a caramel looking glaze whereas the Portage one is a very dark brown.
Re: Carlyle Lanol Hair Dressing bottle
It's very dark where it pools.
The photo may be a little bright but it is pretty close to true.
Rereading your original posts, Ev, I can reply that this one is definitely clear glazed inside but, as you can see for yourself, the base is unglazed so there will be no allover clear glaze beneath the brown as on the coloured ones.
Afterthought:
If the two browns are different then that makes five colours so far.
