Identify maker of fabulous large jug = Wayne Porteous
I found this stunning jug at an op-shop in Hastings today (I paid $4!). Would love to know who the maker is. I especially love the way the handle is fixed. The glazing is wonderful as is the shape of the jug and the clay used. Fabulous piece.
I did have a scroll through the makers marks and Wayne Porteous was a close match. If it is his, can anyone tell me about his pottery?
Yours hopefully,
K.

Re: Identify maker of fabulous large jug = Wayne Porteous
Hi there, this is really stunning in every way. The form, the execution, the glazing and was made by a very talented potter. I can't really see the stamp in any detail, so can't help regarding the maker, but the decoration is familiar. If you search Porteous on this site you will find some of his work. Also Google is everyone's friend

Thanks Ev. I just found a link to the list of makers marks on CeramicsNZ from a link in another thread, and the mark for Wayne they have there is every so slightly different than the one on this website. The W in the centre is rounded rather than have points on the dips, and I can confirm it is one of Wayne's pots (potterID=1091) - I can't post link to this message.
I feel blessed to have found it, despite the few small chips on the rim. It is a wonderful jug. He is a true craftsman.
Will continue to see if I can find more info on him online.
Thank you,
Karen.

Yes it is Wayne Porteous. I have the exact same jug (shape and similar decoration). Mine is very large being about 50 cm tall. I do collect a bit of his work...particularly the highly coloured work in green, yellow and purple, although there is some competition with other family members on this forum for some of it. Worked for a long time in Wellington specialising in glazes. I think he has retired to Taupo although I have met close relatives of his here in Whanganui.

Oh fabulous! Mine is a decent sized jug too Mike, about 30cm tall. Thank you for the info and photo. Much appreciated. K.
