This forum thread has a plausible attribution for these type of pots that we see labeled Crown Lynn all the time. That they should be English makes sense, as there seem to be quite a lot in NZ. 99% of our pre-war ceramics came from the UK. The key to this is the name JAMES PLANT.

If you have a look at this auction, the pair of pots decorated in the Gouda manner are of a form I have seen in NZ in the 'Ruskin-like glaze' also. Its all falling into place...

https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-us/auction-catalogues/golding-young-and-mawer/catalogue-id-ibgo10286/lot-3483b1b2-4df4-48a4-8824-a62000fefe99

In fact, its one of the ones illustrated on this very august site:

Quite by chance one of these beautiful vases came my way yesterday and there is a mark in an oval surround on the base.  I posted about it on Facebook.  I think it's an exciting find, but I can't hook it up with any of the links that you posted T&C.  There was one on Trademe with a silver collar that was hallmarked 1920 and can be seen on the Pinterest page.  Definitely points to British and they mention the collars on the 20th Century site.

Edits to add that I've posted pics on the 20th century site.

Ev, I have seen the replies on the 20th Century Forum, which leaves us no closer to identifying the maker, other than to underline that they were not made in New Zealand. Maybe this is one of those rare occasions when, in the spirit of intrepid inquiry - and for the greater good - you could justify reaching for a fine grained sandpaper and gently abrading that glaze that has so inconsiderately obscured the mark?

Oh wow I hadn't thought of revealing the mark in that way T&C affraid

I've checked out all of the online M marks for British Potteries and other relevant marks without any luck. The odd thing to me is that I've never seen the shape of the two vases in the original post on 20th Century, but the glaze matches perfectly.
I will ponder the best way to attack the glaze ..... eeeek

First grinding experiment failed, as the grinder had black paint on the wheel and this was transferred onto the glaze ..... oh no!!!
It wasn't a cheap pot by any means, so I have to find a bench grinder that has only been used for pottery.

Ev - I would use hand sandpaper only. It might take ages, but you have far more control and you don't run the risk of wrecking the pot. The glaze here is not too thick, so I don't think it will take an inordinately long time.

Thanks T&C that was my husband's suggestion as well.
I've used grinders for years and years, but only to remove excess glaze which is a simple process.

Ev do you have a Dremel or similar? Aldi sometimes stock their copy Dremel and sometimes sell a compatible accessory kit that has dozens of pieces at a fraction of price the Dremel branded ones. This might give you the combo of hand held control and electrical power. While the rest of the fam were in the Bunnings gardening section on Saturday I was drooling over the Dremel display.

Still no wiser are we Ev? May I suggest the very fine grained hand sandpaper again? You would smooth the clouding effect of all the fine scratches and may make it clearer.

I wouldn't worry about that Ev. You've given it a go and still got a very nice vase, that may yet reveal its secret. Your use of the dremel was quite skilful all things considered. I couldn't have done it as well.

I had a comment left on a photo of this ware on Pinterest

C J
I have several of these. James Plant Pottery.

I have asked for more information.
Google turned up a better link on the 20th Century site for James Plant & Sons, but I am still frustrated at the little information available.

http://www.20thcenturyforum.com/t17088-james-plant-and-sons-art-pottery

Fine sanding of the base mark has not been fruitful to date.

That listing on TM is exciting as I haven't seen that shape before and it looks like JP is on the base?  The shape is similar to the Worthpoint listing, but not an exact match. How wonderful to know that they marked their work Made In England by Jas Plant. Thanks T&C

I get "MADE IN", six letters plus a space, but the other is indistinct.

At first look the last letter looks like A but maybe not.

There is almost enough room for England, seven letters, but certainly not for New Zealand.

I googled combinations with Ruskin pottery plus a variety of country namees with no luck. Then tried with blue purple pottery plus various countries but still no luck.

Pretty sure there is not enough room for it to be Australia.
