Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
Some interesting marks there Cat, but I'm getting ready to go to work, so will look at them again much later on.
Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
Thanks Ev, I know some of the marks, but still on my phone at the moment... round two of photos now. I Crop them before uploading, as it saves the correct orientation and stops them being rotated the wrong way.

Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
Can you make out the potter's mark? Its not one of our greats is it - like Stichbury or Castle?

I see the St Ives mark, but the other isn't clear to me at all.
Nevertheless it's a fantastic find Cat

Is that England stamped under the two marks? May be an English potter?

Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
Stitchbury and various other New Zealand potters from that first generation spent periods of time at St Ives training or on sabbatical through government grants for the arts in the 1950-60s, so it is sometimes possible to find a St Ives piece with an NZ potter's mark. Rare though.
For many potters of the Anglo-oriental movement a trip to St Ives to bask in the reflected genius of Bernard Leach and brush-up on technique was akin to a pilgrimage to Canterbury or Rome; so St Ives is a key part of the New Zealand studio pottery story.

Actually... Do you think the mark might be one of the MS's of Mirek Smisek? He was at St Ives for a year about 1963. This coincides with the known period of use of the MS marks. I think it's a possibility.

Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
I would say that you are onto the trail t&c. On my phone I can blow up the mark to full screen and I can see the outline of his M. I will compare it when I get home. The finish on the jug handle is very familiar, so I will check that out too. Very exciting!
Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
The form of the jug is very very similar to my larger Smisek jug - almost identical in profile, and I can see an MS outline that seems to match the one example I could find online of a Smisek St Ives piece.

Re: Some nice finds from the last couple of months
Peter Stichbury used a very similar 'swipe' at the end of his handles too, but his is more straight across, and I've just checked several items and they all have this finish.
I wonder if they learnt this method from Leach at St Ives?
