Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
Could this be Christopher Clouston too?
That was my first thought but then on looking at his known work I saw that it wasn't his typical tree.
To my eye the body and glaze are a match Cat-a-lat's wine sip.
I see a similar handle among his work too.
If there is a mark it is buried deep in the thick glaze near the base. I think the scratched fish mark I have shown may be entirely accidental as there are other scratches on the base. Just guessing though.
108mm H, finely potted stoneware

Re: Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
This is a different guy Jeremy and I will have to search him out. I think he hails from Nelson though and it's the moon that I recognise as his work. Let me sleep on it
Re: Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
I think your mug was made by Barrie Paine and we don't have his mark either.
Here is his website, though his designs have become more simplistic over the years.

Awaiting confirmation
Thanks Ev.
It had occurred to me that the moon might be a distinguishing feature so I'm glad I posted it same day.
I have sent Barrie an email enquiry.
If this is his original "Moon over Westland" design then that would likely confirm the tree as a beech, which it certainly looks like.
Correction: "Mists of Westland"
Another day: http://www.trademe.co.nz/pottery-glass/porcelain-pottery/other-nz-manufacturers/auction-1085789117.htm ???

Re: Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
I have given this topic a new title and split it from the Clouston thread, as it doesn't seem to be his and this is how discussions get lost.

Did you notice if this pot had a mark mumof1?
Re: Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
No mark at all on it anywhere, which is usual for the current items, made of white clay.

Re: Awaiting confirmation as possible Barrie Paine's work
I was chatting to Barrie the other day about how a kiln works, and also about his pottery. Gloworm, you might be interested to know that Barrie says he would have made your piece about 30 years ago. I also asked about his current mark, and he kindly sent it to me, so we now have it for the gallery.
Edits to add, Barrie has confirmed that the mug is not his work Jeremy.
