772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
This early Crown Lynn cup shape is usually seen with handpainted Frank Carpay designs but occasionally with kids' transfers.
unmarked for maker
This one arrived with the handle smashed. I've crudely fixed it and doctored the photo to hide the damage. I was concerned that the spot still visible on the handle might be a crack so I did ask for special care packing. Turns out the dot is a dot and does not mark one of the four separate fractures. Well, seller refunded so I guess it only cost me for superglue but I do hate being the cause of loss or damage.

That's the 728 shape isn't it Jeremy?
I never ask for a refund when I get broken things in the post, as I feel as much at fault for trusting stupid people to get it to me in one piece!

No, not the 728. Taller.
I don't ask for refunds.
I tell the seller what has happened and they usually offer.
It is all very polite.

Re: 772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
Really? Do we have this shape? What shape is it then?
Re: 772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
No number.
From memory it may be in the potters wheel movie.
I believe it is on the old picture you sent me with many strange cup shapes, although the handle looks different (which may be due to shadowing).
Apart from a couple like this on tm with kiddy transfers, I have only seen the shape in real life as Carpay cups.
I will add a pic with kiddy cup shapes.

Well how about that!!!
I always thought that the Carpay mugs were 728's.
There is one on the site from Jim Drummond's that has 772 on the base hmmmm
I will have to do some research when I'm not so tired.

728, xxx, 728 (earlier version of lhs)
728 (1962), 844
728, xxx
But now you mention it the two Carpays that sold recently, Bob and Adelne looked like 844s.

The bowl we have at 772 is clearly a reuse of a number.

Re: 772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
Yes Jeremy, after sleeping on this I agree with you about the number being reused.
The Auckland Museum has a Carpay mug with 772 on it as well and all of the other numbers he wrote on the base of his work are correct, but this one baffled the heck out of me as I could only find the 772 bowl in the records. I will try to find the thread ...
Please check it out Jeremy.

I think design/pattern number rather than shape.

Probably because I'm a Potter, shape comes first. We make a great team Jeremy!

Re: 772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
I've added this mug shape to the Gallery as 772 Original.
I haven't seen the word 'Reused' anywhere in the records and would rather have the description from the records after the number where there are two numbers the same.

Re: 772 early cup shape usually seen with Carpay designs
I have another of these "772"s now: still not a perfect one but this one takes away my secret concerns that I may have got it wrong ...
... as it has a clear, well lets say legible, 48-55 cursive variant "Crown Lynn New Zealand" backstamp (but still no number). The stamp is a match for that on my 728 with the similar, albeit smaller, handle to the 772 indicating similar age. There is a very minor size variation between the two 772s. The repair to the handle of my first 772 is visible in these pics.
From the same trademe seller I also bought a variant on the 728 with the angular handle, like Jim's one that I saw recently. Instead of the sides being straight all the way down, on this cup they curve in to form a smaller footring.
