The Auckland Museum has added 2553 Crown Lynn objects from their collection online!
Crockery, vases, Olive Hale's collection, all sorts !! I was aware that the Auckland Museum had a lot of Crown Lynn, somewhere, but didn't know that they were putting it all online. I must check out what New Zealand Studio and Commercial pottery they have too. Oh and I saw that tiny little pot I found recently and they call it a mustard pot.

Wonderful to see. Well done Auckland Museum. What an odd and unsorted collection they have though, when you see it like that. Trillions of shaving mugs and a pretty random selection of dinnerware. And what saucer goes with which cup?
On pg 22 there is a Toby jug that looks unfamiliar.

The potter is Daniel Steenstra in both photos. It's hard to tell what colour the clay is because when white clay is wet it looks dark.

He could very well be throwing off the hump, as we were told he did this at Beach when he made small vases and the little salt and peppers.

I wanted to say bowls before, but the amount of clay he has pulled up would be larger than those bowls behind him.
While I think of it I want to add that the Auckland Museum has Olive Hale's Crown Lynn collection and this would include all of the backstamp research material that she gathered and would contain as many saucers, plates and items as the countless backstamps that she found and recorded for us to use all of those years later. A lot like my collection in fact

What's going on? Well there are 10 photos showing him throwing a large vase and he is very pleased with the result!

Not being a potter, I am so impressed at the skill and strength required to do this work day after day. No doubt there is strong satisfaction in making something beautiful and useful, but still... Not a walk in the park!
Hey on pg 73 of my first book there is a pic of a vase decorated by Eileen Machin. It is quite large and I have always thought it looked like a Shufflebotham, but the dates didn't add up too well. Now I see the museum pic of Steenstra making one very similar. Happy!
