A Steenstra Brick & Pipe clay vase from Te Papa's collection
Please note the time frame that they have for these vases .... 1945 to 1955

and yet we have records after 1964 for brick/pipe clay vases and an ashtray. I realise that it's the tiki and three stars back stamp that are distracting us as to the year made.

Re: A Steenstra Brick & Pipe clay vase from Te Papa's collection
The Tiki and Three stars stamp was also used on the Ngkura Ware which was made from 1969. Also the Brick Clay Vases are in the Four Digit records from 1964, so the stamp is very misleading.
The Crown Lynn Museum Curator asked Te Papa for provenance for naming the makers Arthur and Olive Rhodes for this ware and they were unable to provide any and have since removed those names from their listings, adding attributed to be made by them.

Does anyone know of any NZ potters who used coloured slip and textures in this way? The style is quite distinctive. This mystery is driving me crazy!

Rosemary got a professional genealogist to search for Arthur and Olive Rhodes and he came up with the same info as I did, in other words zilch.
I'm working on some ideas for the maker, but have nothing certain yet.
