Ev I (rather grumpily) paid about $20 for this bowl at a dealer's in Paeroa. I always assumed it was the same as the rather more common bowl that (for example) we see as the head of Pirate Pete etc.. but now I see it is smaller - the same size as yours!  It does appear to be the same shape as Pirate Pete etc, just smaller. This is a different turquoise from the earlier Air NZ ware - darker and greener. I THINK the pattern no is 673. I have no idea of the history of this ware - perhaps this shape is part of the dark brown Air NZ ware from 1973???? And as well as the brown they did a few in this glaze?????? There is no shape number on the bowl.

This bowl of yours kept me thinking last night.
I've never seen this small bowl shape before and now there are two!
I have seen that backstamp on your bowl before and it's in the Backstamps Gallery and I've asked Tony what shape it is on.

http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/gallery/Crown-Lynn-Backstamps-and-Stickers/1965-1973-air-nz-mark-pic_2381.htm

We have never been able to read the pattern number with certainty until now and I couldn't wait to get up to check the Database for that number and wallah ....
Air NZ DC8 Grn 673
Please note that the DC8 whale-tail pattern is vitrified and the pattern number is 906, so may be a different shade as such.  So this bowl must be earthenware ...?  Even if it was a 'finger-bowl' it should be vitrified .... hmmm.  We worked out a timeframe for that stamp .... 1965 - 1973 from your first book ..... do you agree with that finding?

*Coughs* I paid 50c for my little baby bowl Wink
I'm sure there is a description somewhere in the gallery for a 'Small Bowl', but I haven't found it yet.  Jeremy posted a shallow bowl 1082  Small Bowl but I can't find any measurements.

1083 is a small bowl wider and shallower

I will check if I have any measurements ..... nah and they say these were made in Chch ....

Not sure if I've seen the glaze on my little one before ?

Edits to add:
I've narrowed down the time frame for 673 Air NZ DC8 Grn to circa 1970 using the Decoration Advices, so I'm leaning heavily towards the 1083 shape which was first made in August 1970.

Ev the backstamp on my little green bowl is the same as the backstamp on the brown air nz ware except that the green has the word pattern in full. More thoughts tomorrow.

Ev do you have a list of the shapes of the brown economy class Air NZ ware that was released in 1973? Unfortunately my info came from an issue of Ceramics which I don't have. It's up at the Auckland Museum, the first issue of 'Ceramics' (as opposed to the earlier series of 'New Zealand Ceramics') and it is UNDATED.

I used to have an even smaller bowl than this little one - from memory about 6-7cm across. It was the wet tea bag holder in our bus and I broke in and threw it away... not clever! It was exactly the same style of shape, in brown with the Koru logo in black.

I have never seen another Air NZ item in this particular shade of blue/green and I have absolutely no idea when it would have been made or what for. (which I guess is why I paid thru the nose for it!) It would be good if Tony came back to you with the origins of his backstamp.

Re your wee bowl, that is an interesting glaze and I wonder if it was one of the vast amounts of warehoused bisque ware which were decorated and sold thru the seconds shops in the 1980s.

I can't see any relationship between our bowl and the Luke Adams series. (but have been wrong before today!)
So it's all a big mystery sorry.

There is a section in the records headed Air New Zealand Numbers and they start with 85?? The descriptions are all in the Gallery and I can't find anything that matches the little bowl.
Tony let me know that his backstamp was from a bowl just like your one.
There may be some info in the Modellers drawer .....
