Royal Oak, SAMA Hand Made Pottery, Martex
I'm dumping my four recent R/O acquisitions into one topic.
Pink Salt Pig WITH SPOON!
About 100mm H, Spoon 75
Weird Bottle or Jug.
I think we have the right hand one already.
Left one is freaky.
Both about 130mm H
And the finale...
Royal Oak bottle shape with Sama Hand Made Pottery, Martex sticker.
We have the shape already but not with the cork cap.
I think this sticker is new. I cannot find anything on it.
I have seen this glaze before but never liked it.
I'm wondering if Sama was Royal Oak or a later outfit.

I note two items of mine in the R/O gallery have the same glaze as the Sama piece, a bottle and the retro jug.

The last bottle is most interesting and I hope that one day it's story will be revealed!
I don't think we have determined exactly when Royal Oak stopped producing pottery have we? I wonder what happened to all of their moulds, work in progress etc when they did finish up?

Very cool discoveries, Jeremy. I love the salt pig and spoon, and as for that eccentric oil jug... a special treat for Ev!

SAMA base mark
I saw this mug yesterday and instantly recognised the handle as Royal Oak but then I turned it over. I took a little while to realise what it said: SAMA (and some other marks that could be numbers).
It was chipped, thus the handle to the left in the photo, but I bought it anyway.
As this is our second example of pottery marked SAMA I think we must consider that some of the images in our Royal Oak shapes gallery, while very likely Royal Oak shapes, are not actually Royal Oak pottery.

Re: Royal Oak, SAMA Hand Made Pottery, Martex
I wonder if Sama took over Royal Oak when the closed down?
Re: Royal Oak, SAMA Hand Made Pottery, Martex
Have just found out that Sama is an amalgamation of two surnames.. Owen SAlisbury and Arthur MArtin. They were business partners for some time. Arthur Martin did the marketing side of things. An educated guess puts Sama at the early 1970s for about 5 years. I am now the proud owner of a very clunky Sama stickered mug. I will post a pic later.
EDITS - I have been told that Royal Oak was marketed as Sama by Martex from 1969 into the early 1970s. The explanation of the name above is correct. (April 2020)

So it sounds like all the Royal Oak IS Royal Oak.
Thanks, Val.
Looking forward to seeing your mug.

Re: Royal Oak, SAMA Hand Made Pottery, Martex
I have already posted the shape (above) but do not see it in the gallery.
Interesting thing here is what appears to be a date "69".
I could only make out squiggles on mine. Will review. Done and dunno!
Until Val posted her explanation of SAMA I had guessed that production of SAMA-marked goods came after Royal Oak, but a 1969 date of manufacture is within a few years of Owen Salisbury getting his kiln.

Your mug is now in the Royal Oak Gallery Jeremy, thanks for bringing that to my attention. It looks like your one could have a date too. See you tomorrow night.
