2 small pots what are they used for?
Hi
Does anyone know what these might be used for? I wondered if they are a salt and Pepper missing a cork/lid? They remind me of ink wells. There are no markings on the base.
Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated - Janice

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
JanPots are they JamPots?
Nah.
They are two, so maybe a pair, which does suggest pepper and salt but that would require corks or lids with holes.
If they are for a different sort of condiment, or spice, or mustard, they need to be something you spoon, so are the openings big enough to take a spoon?
They look scarily like Orzel Manhattan in their patterning, like that on the oil/vinegar jug/bottle turned 90 degrees. Is there Orzel without marks?
I haven't seen that glaze on Manhattan, but I have not seen a lot of it yet.
If they are of that time, 70s 80s then inkwells would not have been a standard item.

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
Thanks Jeremy..
Jampots hahaha
The necks of the pots are not that wide, - not that wide to take a spoon, unless it was a long skinny one! salt & pepper pots seem the more likely use, but what sort of top? it would have to be secure or would end up will all the condiment on your plate in a heap. I saw them about 2 months ago $4 each, but yesterday, these were $1 in another branch of Red Cross... On top of that it seemed to be a half price day, I got some interesting bits and pieces.

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
They can't be salt and pepper pots surely, as they need holes for the seasonings to shake out of .......? I would say that they would have had corks in a previous life and would be containers for something. I can't think what though, as spice jars need an opening to take a teaspoon. The glazes do look rather Orzelish to me.
Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
Thanks for the comments team... I think 2 small posy vases can be their next job in life

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
Ev, the question is:
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and waddles like a duck, does it need to have "duck" stamped on its bottom?
Do you know of Orzel items without markings?
From the ones at home I see the marks, whether name or number, are generally impressed, and also I note that on my wee Adelaar oil jug, even smaller than these on the base, they have managed to squeeze in lots of words.
The only kitchen items I am aware of without markings are Kat & Co's basket weave baking dish, and Maryr's (and my) mustard pots all of which are flat-bottomed.
There appear to be a few gaps in the Orzel range in the gallery between the known Manhattan items (114, 116, 117, 118). I guess we just wait until more info comes in.
JanPots, flowers is a nice idea.

INKWELL! (?)
I have one of my own now. Different glaze.
The lady at the market says she remembers them being sold new:
As INKWELLS! (A novelty item apparently.)
I photographed it beside a bit of Orzel Manhattan.
(Because that's what I want it to be!)
Now that I review Janice's picture I note that the foot ring on mine is definitely fatter,
and the neck MAY be shorter.

What is it and who made it?
What is it and who made it?
I'm guessing Orzel.
75mm H x 73 x 34
I think the glaze is a match here:
These were taken in different light but side by side the colours match.
The two pots are pretty much the same height and opening.
---------
15/3/14
It would be nice to be able to say that all the following small containers are Orzel but there is just not enough information available yet. Orzel was not the only Auckland commercial pottery catering to the packaging industry as there are also examples around from Royal Oak, Kermiko, Stewart, and Clay Craft (which at one time produced the Air New Zealand miniatures), as well as other smaller potteries.
Left and right are both Orzel, a packaging container and domestic (I think) mustard pot. Items 2 and 3 are the same height, have similar footrings, openings and glaze.
The left of the two BIC pen pots has a very similar orange glaze to items 2 and 3.
All are a similar size and weight (thickness of body).
They make a nice display together.
I'm guessing Orzel.

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
Hmmm I think they are too pretty for Orzel's ..... and we haven't verified the other shape that you have included yet.
Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
The flower thing is pretty I guess but the workmanship has that Orzel casualness to it.
The impressed pattern is rare in the Orzel on the forum, but the wavy line green mug is kinda pretty.
As Orzel produced a lot of packaging (Abbeville etc) it occurred to me that this may also have been packaging...for something pretty, say a cosmetic item.
I should have taken a picture of the two items in the same light but used the existing one for the "ink pot" instead. The colours, although flipped upside down are a very good match.
Whether Orzel or other, do you think these two have come from the same pottery?

Re: 2 small pots what are they used for?
Yes I do agree that there are similarities that point to the same pottery business.

Hand Ceramics and big fat foot rings
Trying to think who else it might be, other than Orzel, brought Hand Ceramics Putaruru to mind.
It appears they made some short run commercial ware for Waikato businesses. I believe a honey glaze mug with a "Mobil" medallion, advertised on trademe last year as Crown Lynn, was their work. I have seen similar medallion mugs with other business names on, one of which had a recognisable, albeit typically unreadable, impressed Hand Ceramics base mark.
Those big fat foot rings can be seen on lots of work by Hand Ceramics, but then I see from my Manhattan pieces that Orzel made some big fat foot rings too.
Inconclusive!

Well merged!
These round ones are real cute and it's good to see them all together.
