Thanks so much Jeremy for sharing your photos.  We have been after this one for a long time!  Will we ever find out who they were and what the story is?
I like to have an individual topic for each pattern for ease of searching ....

Ev, you have miss-spelled my name!

As for who the characters Arthur & Martha are, I think it's all made up. Same for "Captain Sharples". BTW I will have another scout around to see if I can find him. (They may be a reference to a song, but I don't do music.)
Many years ago when I bought my Purple Myrtles they came in a box with a phony newspaper clipping on it with a silly blurb. I'll dig that out too. I'll put that on the Purple Myrtle topic.

Oops sorry about that, don't know what I was thinking about when I posted that.
All fixed now and I'm looking forward to blurbs and things Smile

I thought 'Arthur and Martha' was a reference to the saying "Doesn't know whether he's Arthur or Martha"

Definitely a bit of pop culture/art going on with this design and the Captain Sharples one, maybe Crown Lynn's wee foray into surrealism? lol wondering whether it's got a bit of a reference to Rene Magritte's 'Son of Man' anyway with that bowler hat... :honjohn:  Wink

Ev,

Please note that they are selling the can with a 4042 saucer which dates from 1976, eight years after the Happenings cans were released in 1968, so you will effectively only be buying the can.

As I have probably said above, you should be looking for jumbo saucers as the correct shape for a Happenings duo.

I have only enough black jumbo saucers to cover my own 3023 cans. You may recall that there was an auction for orange Candystripe cans on coloured jumbo saucers last year. I have a blue tango saucer for my blue Candystripe but none suitable for the others.

From memory I think the cans sit okay on the rimmed saucers but I think you have a Captain Sharples to test it out for yourself.

saucer as seen in the purple myrtle duo:

Thanks Jeremy as I hadn't taken the time to look at the saucer.
I will check out Captain Sharples like you suggest.
