Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
They also use the name Xtatic on their wares and come from Waikuku, Rangiora.

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
I have these 5 mugs listed at the moment, but wanted to share, as they are all Sanderson too, but it's the underside that I wanted to make reference to
Not all of them have the coat-of-arms stamp, so are just the Made in New Zealand in relief. I have seen pottery listed previously with this line and curve, claiming Temuka and also Crown Lynn, so this might help in some way to sort out who made the 'mystery' items perhaps.

Clay Craft molds
The reason I asked Anne about Sanderson is that the mugs are a Kiln Craft or Clay Craft shape. The "Milo" canister confirms that some Sanderson items are made using Clay Craft molds.
I was curious to ascertain whether Clay Craft had produced a line for Sanderson,
or the buyers of Clay Craft had sold the molds.
These are the smaller Clay Craft bellied mugs. I have posted a larger one elsewhere.
On the left in this pic.
The mark on the Sanderson cups, right, is a match for the raised Clay Craft "backstamp", left. Note in particular the letters "A", "E", "M", and "W".
The shape (the font) is identical.
The only thing missing from the base of the Sanderson mug is the name:
"Clay Craft".

Same shape. KilnCraft/Clay Craft also produced these with writing on,
like the "Milo" canister above.
My next question is: who is Xtatic??

Now this is Xtatic !!
Well Jeremy, it is after 7pm, so here it is. A big fat Xtatic bowl / vase, with 4 fat cats on it
They are so groovy, love the bow ties
and the backstamp. As Ev said previously in the post, they are one in the same pottery. As for using the same molds, I believe these are hand potted Jeremy, and this shape is used by a great many potters out there. I saw this shape today at a local pottery I visited. Note that the mugs I have listed all differ in size and shape slightly, possibly due to being formed on the wheel (?), and you can see the ridges from the potting on the belly of the mug, and also on the bases, under the relief wording. Hope that helps a little?

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
I have been told that Clay Craft made some pretty big bowls,
but the only one I have seen is nothing like your Xtatic bowl.

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
The bowl does not have a raised mark Jeremy, just the stamp shown, on flat base. As for the cups, I must apologise, it seems that they must be slip cast. I was under the impression that the rings on the base meant they were thrown, but this must be an anomaly in the mold. Learning all the time!
not a great photo, but you may be able to see them. This cup has a slightly different base too, not sure if it is a number or just some stray clay, can't make out anything specific.

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
Yes, this base is tricky. The blobs are in the right place for Clay Craft but pretty indecipherable.
Sanderson is certainly a pottery to keep an eye out for.
I wonder if they are to Clay Craft as Studio Ceramics is to Crown Lynn, but I'm more inclined to think that they have acquired originals, rather than making molds from old pottery.
I've looked at other Sanderson pieces on tm and don't recognise them at all, so they may be original shapes.
When Clay Craft became Terra they may have put molds in storage or sold them off as they commenced a completely different line from Terra Ceramics Australia. So where have they been in the meantime? When did Sanderson start up? Etc?
My Clay Craft contact has a friend with some molds from back then but but said they may be from another pottery, perhaps Kermiko, perhaps someone else altogether.
I'll follow that up next week.

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
While traipsing down to Dunedin the other day, and looking at a few shops on the way, I found a sugar bowl with lid, in the same design as some other bits I have, green stripes with black squiggles, (not my favourite design ) but impressed under the usual Sanderson mark is Made in New Zealand plus what looks like Clay Craft as well. It is hard to read because the glaze is so thick. Anyway, It is hard enough to get any sugar bowl complete with lid nowadays so it came home with me.

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
A cup and square saucer from Sanderson, not my cup of tea (pun) as the cup is very thick, and I thought it might be unpleasant to drink from, so I didn't get it
But I was sure I could find a use for this lemon bowl, so I got that instead
All have this stamp, which is different from the previous one in that it says vitrified

Sanderson Pottery found!
Hey there,
I'm Jeni Sanderson, co-owner of Sanderson pottery with my husband, Paul.
Sandersdon China & Pottery bought many molds from Clay Craft in the 1980's and continued to use some of their shapes with our own design.
We are a business that has being going since the late 70's, originaly producing in Rangiora, then moving to The Mill, Waiukuku.
We have 2 main ranges of pottery, one being glazed kitchenware and the other, a decorative range titled 'Xtatic', which has been hand-painted.
Our stamp has altered over the years, which is why various ones have been found.
We are still operating in The Mill, Waikuku. Feel free to drop in and have a look! We hope this clears up the confusion, and are happy to answer any other questions you may have

Re: Sanderson Rangiora (Xtatic)
Jeni,
As you can see I recognised the mug and storage jar (Milo) above as Clay Craft shapes.
Thank you for confirming that.
Have you used other Clay Craft moulds as well?
I have seen some Clay Craft shapes used by others including Hobby Ceramics.
Do you remember the circumstances in which you bought yours?

I'm seeing Clay Craft again
Sanderson and Clay Craft.
This auction for six Sanderson mugs appears to show yet another Clay Craft shape.

I bought 4 of those mugs from the OP shop today. All of them have the coat-of-arms stamp. They have a surprisingly irregular surface.

The same bowl, with a geometric desing featuring stars. Sanderson mark, but no Xtatic. The colours make me happy:mumof1 wrote:
