Ugly Toby jugs
I have one of the handpainted ones ( agree , not pretty) Does anyone know how the numbering on the underside works , please.? Does a handpainted 1. mean anything?

Hi RuthM and welcome to the site
I haven't heard anyone mention a number painted on the base of one of the Toby's before, so I can't help. I do know that they were made in the late 1940's as they are in the Crown Lynn film from 1949. You can watch Peter Cook painting one according to David Jenkin's daughter Sue.

different cloours on ugly toby
I almost walked past this CL ugly Toby at the Hospice shop as the colours are so different from the usual. It has the same "1." mark as at last one of haselnuss' examples, also a small impressed number "3" as seen on ca1960 vitrified wares. Not marked Crown Lynn.
Above RuthM refers to the "1." mark as well. I have seen it before but not taken much notice of it.
