Timaru potteries crock
I found this at a garage sale when I was making a quick trip for supplies in the weekend. It was past my budget for garage saling really but I could not resist as I have a soft spot for these type of things. Have been admiring greatly the wonderful triple row of coggling on base and lid, and marvelling that it has a lid at all even if it does have a crack!
It has the oval stour ware mark.

Re: Timaru potteries crock
Do you have any idea when this wonderful crock was made Thelma?
There are similar things in this Exhibition that date from 1935 to 1939

Re: Timaru potteries crock
Hi Ev, I have a little book by Davina Davis that I bought from the South Canterbury Museum which gives a little of the history of Timaru potteries and it states" Early wares appear to be stamped on the base"Stour Ware Timaru" and are made with the oatmeal coloured Mt Somers clay quarried from near the Stour River. They are mostly glazed with the tan brown Bristol Glaze."
This crock ticks all those boxes so I am going to assume that it was made somewhere around the 1935 -1939 era. If anyone can verify that I would be pleased as I am no expert!
It is truly stout and would hold 40 pints, according to the book. The previous owners used it for storing their onions!
The company name for this era was The South Canterbury Pottery and Mining Co. Ltd.

Re: Timaru potteries crock
Hi Ev, I just had a look at the website you gave and the pictures there are the same as the ones in my book. The book does show a crock the same shape as the one I have, but it is the 20 pint one and it is without a lid.
