OMG I found a 1011 canoe bailer today!!
It was only the numbers that made me aware that this was Wharetana ware .... as we only have a copy of a photocopy from the old catalogue in the Wharetana Gallery.
The catalogue says this about the bailer:
"A direct miniature of the Maori Canoe bailer with a traditional Hei Weku figure. These figures, generally known as Tikis, represent Maui of Old according to some legends and are considered as giving grace and strength besides being lucky talisman."
It has cut outs .... I thought at first glance that it was Titian.
It has a metal flower spike glued inside ... gggrrrr ..... but never mind. The spike has had a lot of use, which is a good thing. With the cut outs it would limit the amount of water it would hold, so it would have to be used for Ikebana or the like.
The plain brown glaze work is shocking .... rather patchy and has pin holes on the base.
I never dreamt that anyone could find Wharetana ware in opshops
Photos to come ....

Congratulations Ev,
What a lovely find, how excited you must have been when you spotted it ?
I see it as a payoff for all the hard work you put in on this site.

I can only find one other 1011 on the net - this one that was auctioned at Webb's in 2011 -

I want to point out that this one has different cut-outs to the one I found......
I wonder why?

Re: OMG I found a 1011 canoe bailer today!!
I've been putting spring flowers into Crown Lynn vases and used this vase for the first time ...
How lucky am I now to find that the metal spike wasn't glued to the pot, but had some sort of tacky stuff that stuck it to the vase and when I washed the vase it fell off.
So flipping pleased about this
