Not a Tennis set .. this is an Oblong TV Tray actually ....
Does anyone know why these are called tennis sets? They made the Tahitian sets (1960s I think) and these more chunky ones (80s I think). I seem to recall seeing them called Tv sets as well, and maybe picnic sets.....
This has an interesting backstamp that I haven't seen on anything besides these sets. The plate is rectangular, our camera just makes it a bit of an odd shape.

Just noticed a TV Tray made just before the Dorothy Thorpe plates in the records.
Haven't come across a Tennis Tray yet.

my best guess as to why 'tennis set' or 'tv set' is that it's for when you don't have a handy perch for both your cup and saucer and your side plate with your biscuit or sandwich etc (petit fours anyone?) for instance watching the tennis of tv lol

Perhaps this is a tennis plate, and the one in the photo is a TV tray?

Have to add that I just came across this in the records:
8051 - Oblong TV Tray - the first date made is 15.11.1983
Any idea as to which this might be?

So is this the 8051 then? A good price for the set, shame the shipping is twice as much as the cost of the set. This must be the TV tray do you think?

It may be indeed, but I need more confirmation.

Now I feel strongly enough that this is the Oblong TV Tray having had confirmation that the Tahitian set is the 4010 TV Tray. This will now go into the Four Digit Gallery as 8051. Thanks Maryr

Looking for something else and came across this which is different to the Canton pattern as this is very white. Paradise d745 is the same pattern as Canton, but is on Low Sol which is the white the insides of cups has on the to make them look white. The flatware has two brown outer lines and the backstamp.
Janice what do you reckon?

I am unsure as I don't have any notes about paradise, only what you wrote, saying white on forma shape, with 2 brown outer lines

I have canton pattern on a white glaze 3038 cup. If that helps ?

Not sure either as all of the shapes are Forma including the cup 3027 with the pattern on Low Sol. Hopefully one will turn up .... soon.
