Black colouring ~ A Question
http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=477024403
I noted on this auction the question about the black colouring on some Crown Lynn, and the base ring being white. If a vase is glazed black, would the ring be black or white? I notice this vase has a black base AND ring. Would be interested, as I don't have any black pieces (as yet ) and have often wondered if perhaps some had been painted.

Re: Black colouring ~ A Question
Yes, I noticed that auction too ....
I don't know the answer either, so I searched 'black' on here and only found one Crown Lynn black piece showing the base -

Must check out any on Trademe too.
My only thoughts are that Crown Lynn used a white clay and none of the glaze should be on the base ring, or else it would stick to the shelf in the glaze firing.
Another thought .... if the black was sprayed on as an underglaze .. it could cover the base and not be a problem.
More research needed!

Thanks signal-red, I'm so pleased that someone understands what I'm trying to say
I forget that not many people speak in pottery terms on here and post as if everyone will know what I mean.
I have found that coloured slip applied to leather hard ware works the best, so am impressed to hear that Crown Lynn did that too.
