Lucky Cat
They have that Daniel Steenstra look about them. He started work at Crown Lynn around 1953 as a hand potter and worked there for about 20 years. There could have been other hand potters as well, but Daniel is the most well known.
Just checked him out in Val Monk's book and it says that he after he left Crown Lynn he went to Beach Artware to work. Must remember that!

Does that mean they were hand potted? Or is hand crafted the name of the pattern/vase shape?

Re: Daniel Streenstra Vases - Thanks Ev
Hand Crafted means that they were made on a wheel by hand.
Not made in a mould as the majority of Crown Lynn's wares were -these were called slipcast ware.
Hand Potted appears to be only used on the Ernest Shufflebotham type vases, where they were thrown on a wheel and then turned on a kind of lathe to get the perfect shape over and over again.
Although I think there was a Shufflebotham piece on Trade Me recently that had Hand Crafted stamped on the base .... ?
A very lucky find indeed!

Both Gail Henry and Val Monk show that this backstamp was from the mid 1950's !!

Just the right place at the right time. I'm glad I bothered to be nosey...
I found a .315 today but it had an almighty crack in it. It's in plain white but I've never seen anything like it. May bring that home tomorrow...
Feel like I've won lotto...or, how I imagine winning lotto would be like.

But Cat - I think that green alien smilie is smiling with envy
Dasiem I've been checking out a few things and Streenstra vases are few and far between. Take good care of them, as you are now the custodian of some great NZ pottery history

Thanks Ev. Custodian sounds like a big responsibility. Once I'm on the farm, I'll find a lovely spot to display them.
Probably with my lavender set...yay

We are only ever custodians when it comes to pottery......
as pottery has a much longer life span than humans do.
Except for accidents and earthquakes, pottery can be around for hundreds, even thousands of years.
That's how I see it through my potters eyes
