Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
Here is the possible Crown Lynn/Luke Adams ashtray for Heather to identify hopefully
No markings but looks like the same browny glaze to me .... which breaks to black where it is thicker ..
and a view of the base...

An ashtray the same as the one I found has been listed on TradeMe as Ngakura ...

The glaze breaks to blue on the one listed ... the same as that on my Ngakura piece.

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
The ashtray is either a 1053 ( square cartellated??) ashtray (1968)or a 1056 - (large square cartellated??) ashtray from 1969. It will refer to the design, doesnt look like calibrated but something like that...the drawings dont have size depicted.

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
Does that mean that you don't have a drawing for those numbers Heather?
I have a ramekin in the same glaze ....
I think it has the number 1163 on the base and also MADE IN NEW ZEALAND.
Could it possibly be Luke Adams .... it has a very smart diamond pattern around it.

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
I do have drawings Ev and they look the same, only difference seems to be size.
1163 is an individual casserole which has a small handle and what looks like a diamond pattern on it. It was made in Christchurch in 1973.

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
Excellent stuff Heather .... we still make a great nz pottery team
Now back to the whatsit ashtray.....
there was an auction on tm with a similar one ... the other glaze and the measurements were
171 x 171 x 36 ....... mine measures 165 x 165 x 42 or thereabouts ....so near but so far away ????
Surely they wouldn't make a smaller ashtray by that much smaller?

Ashtrays are castellated Heather ..... built like a castle with turrets and battlements .....
So if they look the same and we can't tell which one I have ........ ....... .......
can I use the same pic for the 1053 and the 1056 until I find another one? Huh????

1053 and 1056 Ashtrays

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
When I walked into my local Opshop the other day I couldn't believe my eyes....
sitting on the pottery and crockery shelf were two ashtrays side by side.
One was just like the one above that I already have the 1053, but in the Ngakura bluey glaze and beside it was a massive ashtray in the same design, but with an upraised square in the centre and it was glazed in the same Ngakura bluey glaze
It had to be the 1056 ..... I checked both of the bases and there were no markings, but I knew this was one piece that I may never see again and I didn't care what it cost! All in the name of research
Hopefully will get a pic tomorrow

Re: 1053 and 1056 Ashtrays
I will put photos of the two different sized ashtrays together for size comparison ...
which would be almost correct!
The colour is too difficult to truely capture ... just like my Ngakura piece!!
The base of the big 1056..
How lucky to find such a piece!! No markings .... just Museum drawings to go by, that I hadn't seen and I only got the small ashtray as it matched the glaze to other pieces that I was finding at the time .......

Large ashtray Lucow glaze, smaller one Basalt. All of these Luke Adams topics should show plenty of examples.
