A set of six mugs by Peter Collis with gold lustre decoration
A set of six mugs by Peter Collis with gold lustre decoration.
I was delighted to find this set of mugs by Peter Collis.
The lustre decoration is similar to that seen on some of Peter's vases.
These were bought in Devonport by the trademe seller, Beatrice, in the mid-90s.
She told me she was selling them because she did not find sufficient occasion to use them.
The condition is as new.
I was under the impression that these were not marked (and maybe Beatrice even told me as much) but each is stamped "handmade by PS Collis NZ" adjacent to the handle.
Mug bodies are hand thrown but the handles may be cast or pressed.
sample mug height 120mm, heights vary
the set, and Peter Collis' stamp
These are very difficulty to photograph as the lustre reflects whatever colour is nearby. I first tried a red background but the gold picked up too much of the red. Even with the black backing the gold on the bodies of the mugs has almost completely disappeared. It is best seen on the second photo in the shadows on the right hand side. The photo of the maker's stamp should give an idea of the effect.

A new Peter Collis mark, a signature
I made an unplanned stop at Kaiwaka Saturday and found another Peter Collis mug.
That less than a month after buying a full set!
It is slightly shorter than the shortest of the others and signed, and dated 92, underneath rather than stamped on the side, otherwise the same design and decoration. I think it will be a bit earlier.
