Re: Len Castle travelling Exhibition..... Mountain to the Sea
Went to this Exhibition today at Lopdell House Gallery Titirangi .... it was splendid!!
More than 60 pieces of Len's work was on display - most were made in the last couple of years - but there were a few pieces from the 1990's - these stood out as the reduction firing technique that he used was in contrast to the more soft and muted tones of his new work which is low fired white earthenware.
Len's inspiration for his work comes from the natural New Zealand landscape especially the volcanic regions and his huge crystal blue crater bowls and bright red lava pots reflect this.
There were many Sea Secrets in all shapes and colours - some looked like coral with soft pinks and orange tones - others looked like kina with a surprise splash of unexpected colour in the centre.
The one piece that took my eye was a yellow bowl with a fantastic 'woven' texture on the inside. YELLOW?? Yes even the colour surprised me too! My thoughts are that he laid some sort of material inside the bowl and then sprayed the yellow glaze over it ... quite thickly - then removed the material to reveal an exciting pattern. Very clever!
