Re: Beach or Lowrie?
I can't identify whether Beach or Lowry from the glaze, but I go along with the maker, as that is how Daniel Steenstra made his little lids.
Hopefully someone else will know

Fantastic to see those letters
Plus you can see the shape clearly, especially the lid
I have something with DS that is very special

Hi Truffles
Re your 'Beach or Lowrie?" pot, this is not a glaze that Peter Lowrie used.
Beach used quite a variety of glazes, hence I would say it is most likely to be Beach
HOWEVER... I can't guarantee that. This glaze is not one of the more common Beach glazes.
Steenstra worked briefly for at least one other pottery, someone in Christchurch.
To complicate matters further, he taught his style to many other potters.

Re: Beach or Lowrie?
Thanks Maryr. Yes, I think it is Beach too. Do you think he taught others to make the tiny pots? I have a few and I love them. Interestingly the lid of the DS one is a little wonky. The other unmarked ones fit like a glove.

Interesting that you should ask that question Truffles, as Sharon Beach said Daniel was the only one to make the little lidded pots and the salt and peppers as nobody else could be bothered as they were so fiddly.

Re: Beach or Lowrie?
Yes Truffles I too remember Sharon Beach telling us that Daniel was the only one who could be bothered making the tiny pots
Re the lid - we have also been told that the lids were not made specific to a particular pot. Steenstra was very skilled at producing a whole lot of pots all the same size and shape. He made a range of pots, then the lids which were placed in the kiln in the gaps between the pots. Lids and pots were put together after the firing.

Re: Beach or Lowrie?
Great info, thank you Maryr. I just looked at the Beach Salt and Pepper. Love them. Will have to keep an eye out. Have never seen any. Did post this: https://www.newzealandpottery.net/t10469-lowrie-white-glaze-s-p#40384 which are Lowrie and have Mr S written all over them.
