Happy Hens...
Love these little sweeties; I've had the one on the left for years, now I have two! They are made on the Portobello Peninsula in Dunedin and hand painted. They have been going for decades - unfortunately the website doesn't give a start date. I visited the shop a couple of years ago, it's very appealing.

Re: Happy Hens...
Two Happy
From the Happy Hens website it appears, although it does not spell out, that there are three sizes of Happy: Hen, Chick and Rooster. See: http://www.happyhens.co.nz/index.php
mine are chick (left, 60mm H x 55 diameter) and hen (80 x 85)
the breed can be seen on the label
Hen is a Norfolk, as the label says. Chick has lost label and I didn't see this pattern, either on the site or among those for sale on trademe, so without searching chooks on google I have no idea of its breed.
Listings on tm of boxed hens give sizes of medium and large for what I think are more likely small (chick) and medium (hen). One listing gives height for rooster of about 120mm which seems to fit. Also seen on tm is a wall hanging hen.
Val's chooks, from the shape (which is most discernible at the tail), appear to be chicks.
The year 1984 was mentioned in the history section of the site as "about" the time they started.
