I think that is should be up the other way, and it is SM. Now I have seen this recently, but it may have been an auction on TM.

The only confirmation I can find that it is Stephen is a Pinterest pin, which is not 100% reliable, but probable. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/198228821072693149

How similar are those two marks????
One is impressed in a square surround and the other seems to have been applied with a ceramic stamp and has a round surround.
If we find that it isn't right we can always change it at a later date fortunately.

That sounds good and it is unlikely that a potter in Australia potted a mug for Christchurch in 1974.

This is not the mark of Stephen McCarthy, as confirmed by him.
He only used stoneware clay, never white clay.
A similar mark of his is in the Marks of New Zealand Potters book, but it's not this one it is SM one above the other.

Great excitement thanks to Kerrie Lee on Facebook who has found the potter who used this mark through people who know this info first hand
Milan and Ladi Slava Kavale were potters in Temuka.
This is the stamp that they used !!!
In 1979 they went on to form Marold Pottery Studio also in Temuka.
So fantastic to have this sorted, as even the Potters' Marks book has this wrong!!!!

An interesting thread to read through - that mark is that of my Czech grandparents, Milan and Slavka (Ladislava) Kavale! They moved from Temuka to Melbourne for several years in the early 80s (hence the Australian finds), then eventually returned to Christchurch.

I love their work. It’s amazing!!! Such beautiful skills. I have a standing trademe search for similar stuff. There’s a bud vase for sale recently but I’m not into that shape… do you have more information about them? Honestly beautiful work - I’d love to buy more!!!
