Elizabeth Beechey

20cmh Jug.. I assume this must be Elizabeth Beecheys mark..have seen it on other pieces too... the bottoms are always neatly glazed the colour of the pot

Does anybody know much about this potter? She seems to have been very prolific and her domestic ware is always well potted, fastidiously glazed but without a turned base. Even her cups have flat bottoms, flush with what they're resting one.

I have often wondered who made this pottery, but I have never seen a piece with a mark on it. Earthenware and glazed on stilts, low fired. The glazing has a yummy feel to it. I've never picked up a piece, but now I will just to have it in my collection. Can't find anything about her on the web, but Te Papa has some sort or record in her name.

Another couple of EB's. I don't think the blue jar had a lid.  These are very nicely made, thin and nicely glazed... just not quite my style.  I also have a few other items with signatures and glazing in a similar style.. Here is a link to the others.

A search has brought up an Elizabeth Beechey :
Elizabeth (Betsy) Rebecca Beechey (born Lock) was born in 1888, at birth place, to George Lock and Emily Lock (born Lyons).
in Bermondsey Southwark England.
Elizabeth married Frederick Ernest Beechey in 1911, at age 23
Frederick was born Circa August 1885, in Bermondsey Southwark London England.
His occupation was Sprits Warehouseman, they had 6 children
Elizabeth married Frederick William True in 1935, at age 47
Elizabeth lived to 1952 and passed away in1952, at age 64

I had started to think that the EB and ER were 2 different people using similar styles
The blue Jug and planter have the EB mark, the brown with jug and mugs has the ER on the mugs
After reading the above about Elizabeth Rebecca Beechey,
I now think the ER could stand for Elizabeth Rebecca and be the same potter.

for this work to be the same Elizabeth Beechey she would have to have produced all the work we have seen, and that is a lot, before 1952, which would make her one of New Zealand's pioneer woman potters, and much better known.

You say she had six children. They would be of a better age to be producing in the 60s through 80s which would better explain the pottery we have all seen. What do you know of them? Was there an Elzabeth among them, and did she marry a Mr R-ight to become ER?

It does not say she is a NZ potter, I do not have any proof to conclude it is the Elizabeth Beechey from NZ records
Elizabeth Beechey is listed as a NZ Artist along with the likes of Sam Cairncross
who is a great grandfather of my son-in-law
So if she was a contemporary that would make her a pioneer potter

Yes I agree due to the prolific amount of pottery with the ER mark, it would sit with being one of the children

There is somewhat less with the EB mark

So I googled and found her name in NZ Potter magazine 1982...a member of the potters who sold thru the 12 potters shop in Auckland...see article 12 Potters 20 years pg. 21.
