(I have put this topic in cup shapes because I am looking for a cup but I don't know what it could be.)

Hospice had a lot of Crown Lynn white saucers in fill-a-bag this morning.
I was fortunate to get one each in Forma shape, and a wide well saucer for my white cup collection.
Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 White_10

Everything I took away was unmarked (no backstamp) and in pristine condition, except what I took to be a jumbo saucer, which was crazed but even so a very handy thing to have.

My next stop was Jill's shop to get a teal jumbo saucer for a teal jumbo cup I just got on trademe.

When I got home and unpacked I discovered that what I thought was a white jumbo saucer wasn't. It is bigger in OD than the jumbo, but slightly smaller in well size.
Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 White_11
In the stack ...
standard tulip saucer: 144mm OD, etc
teal jumbo: 149 OD, 55 well
jumbo jumbo: 156 OD, 52 well

If this clear glazed earthenware saucer, which I take to be 1960s on rather than 1950s, is indeed Crown Lynn, then what number could it be and what cup will it fit?

Janice, it appears to be 6 3/16, so if you remember your imperial measurements that's half way between 6 1/8 and 6 1/4.

It is an earthenware coupe shape saucer, not vitrified.
It is the same size OD by eye as the roll edge vitrified railway saucers, but my vitrified railway-shape (ie 700) cups do not fit the cup well.

Now that I have pulled out my "CCC" monogram 48-55 700 I see that it has a smaller footring and fits the well just right. But that is matching a vit cup with an E/W saucer!

I have just enough vit saucers for my later 700s (including having just got a Navy monogrammed cup for my Navy saucer), but I had forgotten about that one.

If there is an earthenware 700 cup it may fit: I have no idea.

It is only a guess that it is 1960s etc but I suppose it could be earlier. I just assume that all those unmarked clear glaze (ie white) saucers are 1960s.

The 702 hotel saucer is a vit according to the gallery.

Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 Empty wide shallow saucer

Post  Jeremy Ashford Thu 4 Sep - 12:33

I bought a bunch more unmarked white saucers yesterday including 805 coupes, 4019 Apollos, and this new odd one, along with a couple of double red stripe 4615s (?) with 1970s stamps. $1.50 the lot seemed to good to turn down.

The next odd saucer.: Wide Shallow Earthenware Coupe with standard cup well.
Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 Anothe10
unmarked, 1960s footring,* 150mm OD x 45 well x 45 ring x 17H (on average)
In the stack, top to bottom increasing in diameter:
tulip saucer (805), jumbo saucer (744), new shallow saucer, jumbo jumbo.
My control 805 saucer is about 23mm H and jumbo jumbo is 25.

*i am supposing from previous observation that of the two footring sizes on earthenware saucers that the smaller is the earlier, based on a coinciding thickening of the body, consistent with remarks I heard from Mark Cleverley.

hello Jeremy. about your 6 3/16 saucer in white earthenware these also seen with a crown lynn scroll backstamp. The white Thorpe shape cup (see Unusual Dorothy Thorpe) might go with this saucer. Cups in pics have transfer pattern. Do you think maybe these shape cups come in plain white or are a match for the wide saucer?

I've never had much to do with the Thorpe stuff so I am not familiar with it but saucers you pointed me to look even bigger.
Maybe if someone has the measurements we could compare.

The 6 3/16 has pretty much the same profile as the Cook and Serve saucers, a bit steeper at the edges than the tulip cup saucers.

The 6 is flatter but still a good coupe shape.

I've spent a bit of time looking into correct fits for the vitrified cups and saucers, but know very little about the earthenware.

I came across quite a few profiles for saucers that will help, while researching on Friday, both E/W and Vit.  I will process them when I can.

There must be a few more odd ones. That's good news.

I couldn't believe how many items came up on the search for "unusual" I used to find the Thorpe topic.

Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 Empty Barbara's saucer

My control 805 saucer is about 23mm H and jumbo jumbo is 25.
[NB the saucer I have called a 744 above is a 4017]

Anyway ...
I have been going through my various and sometimes odd earthenware coupe saucers and the latest thing I note on "The next odd saucer" is that it is a perfect match for a recently acquired (cupless) turquoise-coloured "Crown Lynn for Barbara's" saucer.
[a picture may follow some time]

So ...
I am still no wiser about Dorothy Thorpe saucer shapes, but now I know for certain that my unmarked saucer is CL and if anyone can identify a cup shape for "Barbara's" that is the match for this saucer.

I will have a look around, on the forum, and elsewhere on the net.

Well, what I have seen so far is two pictures of cups for Barbara's that appear to be 3066 Honey cups from 29.3.84
https://www.newzealandpottery.net/gallery/Crown-Lynn-Shapes-Catalogue-with-Four-Digits/Cups-Earthenware-3000-3599/3066-honey-cup-29384-pic_4134.htm

I'll try and link the net photos. One was etsy.com, one Pinterest.
Pinterest one

And Etsy one, it's sold so the reference photo linked is as good as it gets.

Ev, Janice, Barbara's may have used more than one saucer shape but this is all I've found. What numbers have you found for a matching saucer for the honey cup?

(I'll look for later saucers in the gallery now.)
It looks like the 4062 Classique saucer.
The dimensions appear to match Portage
http://www.nzmuseums.co.nz/account/3384/object/490191

So I now need to check my stray white cups to see if I have a 3066 there.
The plain white colour led me astray, to think it was earlier than 1982.
At least it appears that I have an answer for one of my odd saucers.

I have to go through the early ones now. I think I'm up to five different 805s.
Done. It's nice to get the right sauders under the plain cups.

The Honey cup was also sold on the 4050 rim bell cup saucer 2.4.81 as seen in this tm ad for a duo in Cotswold Pink d289:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pottery-glass/Porcelain-pottery/Crown-Lynn/Cups-saucers/auction-940003863.htm

The pairing I have shown in my photo may have been a special one for Barbara's.

Nope. I see Homestyle d74600 also used the 3066/4062 combination:

Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062 Empty Re: Unusual E/W saucer shapes: jumbo jumbo & 4062

Post  Jeremy Ashford Fri 28 Aug - 18:41

Thanks Ev.
A frustration of working on the iPad is that when I change tabs to get a reference while editing everything disappears so I have to keep sending.

I have one more pic to do, just to show that it is the same saucer as the Barbara's one.

Back in school you got extra marks for showing the working out but here I fear it just bores people.

I started to assemble all my odd saucers to photograph together but got distracted.
Well at least one is sorted.

Another day ...
I was just looking at my white cups and found a Classique (3061 29.7.82), which of course pairs up with a Classique saucer. Thought I may have made a mistake, but the cup in this "for Barbara's" pic is definitely the Honey cup:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/100205160435967154/

I suppose I need another of these saucers now, but then again I could put the Honey cup on a "rimmed bell cup" saucer (4050 2.4.82) as it appears that was the standard saucer for it.

In review ...
It appears that Ev has already covered this material:
