April 27th 1966 to be exact Very Happy
The complete back cover of the Weekly News ...which seems bigger than I remember ...
The entire range of Carousel is there including Storage Jars that I've never seen before, but now have the shape number - 5011 [first made 24.1.66] and I could only find with the correct term that Crown Lynn used.  The next thing is to work out whether this is the old or the new Carousel.  I've often seen references to this on Trademe auctions, but haven't found out which came first.  This range has the name Bevelled Bottom and is similar to the Shape 25 shapes which is bevelled bottomed.  I have to find the Bevelled Bottom sugar and the Shape 25 sugar to see what the differences are, as they have different shape numbers.

The complete magazine came with the advert and I was delighted to find this ad for Greggs coffee using the Mogambo coffee cans ....

MMMM? not into bevelled bottoms, really Smile Smile Smile Smile
But I have two examples of Carousel which differ both in design and backstamp
No Photos just at the moment but will do later.

The design in the advertisment that you have pictured I suspect is the later version of this design same as two pieces that I have with slightly narrower coloured bands , 10mm rather than 12mm, and the tones of the the colours a little more intense. Because of the reduced width of the bands the white space between is more pronounced, this is waht leads me to suggest that your examples are the later version.

The Back Stamps also differ The example that I presume is the older or original is the standard circular stamp with permanent detrgent proof colours. The other pieces have a unique Carousel Back Stamp with Crown Lynn in script and no circle.

Have just had a look on the site at :-
http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t1148-carousel-pat-no-493?highlight=carousel
and the photos a little down the page are the same as my "newer' styles.

Can confirm that both old and new are Pat. No. 493.The Egg Cups just have the new style Back Stamp , no Number.

Hope this helps.

ps still looking for a side plate to complete a set of 2 S/plates 2 Small Sweets and two egg cups that we use for 4 minute eggs.

Has anyone here ever seen one of the larger carousel cannisters shown in the advert? I think I have a new mission :-)

Jonno, reading through mrnarna's words, I reckon he is saying that the thinner rings are the older style and the thicker the newer. This advert is from 1966 and the cup with the unusual handle was first made in 1965. The newer Carousel has the shape 25 cups which were first made in 1967 ......

Yes Ev, I agree , the later versions with the unique green backstamp have more (wider) white spaces and narrower and stronger, more definite coloured rings whereas what I am calling the older or original production has a standard back stamp , black in a circle and the coloured rings are a more muted or pastel shade and are wider.

BTW Valerie Monk at P51 under Four Seasons mentions the technique of adding these coloured bands by using slip glaze and was first used on Carousel in 1965. So maybe the "older" were early trials?

Sorry about time delay but have off the air for a day or two on other tasks.

Hope this helps

Sorry, no, I haven't, but what I have seen is a Rorstrand (Swedish) Tobacco ("Tobak") jar that may be a physical match.
This makes me wonder if like the Cook & Serve cups, the spice canisters are based on Rorstrand work.
My own handful of Rorstrand canisters, individually labeled in English, are taller and thinner than the standard CL ones. Not a match. I have seen others labeled in Swedish but forget the size.

The Carousel display in the ad certainly is nice, but I am already committed to other lines, so if I see one I'll let you know.

Interesting, I had never noticed the difference in patterns here until now, and even more interesting is within my Cannisters I appear to have both old and new...will be scrambling around to find which box they are stored in tomorrow to check their bases...

Thanks Jeremy, you just never know where one of these large cannisters could surface so any extra sets of eyes is always welcomed.

Hope your Cordon Bleu's have arrived safe and sound?

Hi all,

apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I've been trying to make out the writing on the Carousel advertisement at the top of the post. I can't quite figure all the words from the image, with one word a total blur to my eyes (updated 27/08/2017 with correct words), but below is what I've got:

'Carousel' by Crown Lynn

A new "replacement" for breakfast, lunch or dinner - spice and store jars to match. Generating an air of excitement "Carousel" joins Crown Lynn's famous replaceable in a whirl of gay bronze bands. Fashion colours indeed - a thrilling break with the conventional. Carousel is acid and detergent resistant because the colours are applied by hand under the glaze - will never fade. A very tasteful colour sequence indeed. 36 pieces cost an attractive £8.19.6. Individual pieces: teacups and saucers 5/11, cup 4/-, saucer 2/3, bread and butter plate 3/3, luncheon plate 5/6, dinner plate 6/6, sweet plate 2/9, coupe plate 5/6, egg cup 2/6, sugar bowl 5/-, cream jug 6/9, pepper and salt 12/6 pr, spice jars 8/6, storage jars 18/6

£8.19.6 for a thirty six-piece set - that's $337.80 in today's (2017) prices!
