Why not private message hon-john, as he doesn't come on site very often.
He will happily help if he can.

Electric Kettles / Jugs Empty Re: Electric Kettles / Jugs

Post  JP Sat 9 Mar - 17:45

The information I have suggests the production of Crown Lynn electric jugs came to an end in 1948. More research on the Russell Hobbs aspect is probably warranted. The Crown Lynn jugs had an impressed mark of '240V and 7A'. Initially the heating element was a wire in the water, then later a coil element was used which was replaced by a stainless steel safety version. Sounds like the early ones would have been quite dangerous by today's standards.

I am really happy to see this. I have never seen a pic of a coffee perk before. When I interviewed Eileen and Ray Machin, they said that when they came from England in 1959 CL was making electric jugs. And the Ak Museum records note that coffee perks and electric jugs were made in the Titian factory in the 1960s. So it is great to see one in the flesh as it were! I don't have a record of the shape - one of my references is from Tam Mitchell's book, it would be wonderful if it included a sketch but I don't recall one.

I have talked to Hon John, and he does not recall see markings of any kind on the jugs he has, and are on loan at present so can't check. There is another jug stamped Ambrico, which looks quite different, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=570367314 and i am hoping to get this one. it is the handle on the other that bugs me confused

These Ambrico jugs are the early ones (between 1944 and 1949 according to a Crown Lynn publication). The museum has two examples (at least). One with the electrical specs on the base and one with Ambrico on the base. Good luck with this auction, these jugs are not easily found. I have put myself on the watchlist just to see how it goes!

Electric Kettles / Jugs Empty I found another one !!!

Post  mumof1 Fri 19 Apr - 14:55

 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05310
I spied this in an op-shop window yesterday as I was driving past, and after half an hour, just had to go back, as I was sure I has seen correctly, and sure enough, another one. This one is in bad condition, crazed, cracked, chipped and filthy, BUT ....
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05311
It has the original little hinge thingy on the lid, and the contacts for the cord, so
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05312
that means it has the original element in it too! I wonder if I could get someone to transfer it to the other one? The base is marked the same too. I had to pay the price on it, which was over $20, but am happy with the result. I love it when I find a really old treasure cheers sunny

Electric Kettles / Jugs Empty Anything is possible if you want it enough!

Post  mumof1 Wed 8 May - 20:38

 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05417
I sent a message to the seller on e-bay and voila! I can't get the photos to come out the right colour, a butter yellow with a hint of green, even though I took lots, but I guess that's not what is most important, so here is my new perfect 778 jug in different colours Embarassed
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05418
I believe this is the true 778, and the other 2 jugs were made by Ambrico and would be older.
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05419
This one has a different element inside too, suspended from the back
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05420
Shown here with a baby swan, it is big and quite heavy, how they ever used it to boil water in I don't know, it would have been even heavier - they must have been housewives with bulging muscles :whistles:

Electric Kettles / Jugs Empty I Found Another Electric Jug Number 782

Post  mumof1 Tue 11 Jun - 11:37

 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05718
This one is a different shape again, I didn't purchase it, but I got photos!
 Electric Kettles / Jugs Dsc05719
This one is numbered 782, and has the same numbers PS 203 on the base, like the jug that Tarvster sent us http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t3470-crown-lynn-electric-jug#11280 so perhaps we should put these in the gallery also? sunny

Electric Kettles / Jugs Empty Re: Electric Kettles / Jugs

Post  Ev Tue 11 Jun - 12:27

I can only find the 778 Electric Jug Body in the records ....
782 is recorded as a cup and 785 isn't recorded.
These numbers began during Ambrico days and pieces with experimental glazes on them have numbers that correspond with the records.
I know Temuka made Electric Kettles but their shapes are distinctive -
did any other pottery make them too?
Can someone research this and get some definite info please ?
Not sure what to do .............. any ideas would be welcome.

Yes, there are the Temuka too, and of course, as above in the link, even a Luke Adams. I can't find any info on Ecolite, apart from previous auctions. It is irking me that those bases are just so similar....

McSkimmings/Benhar made electric pottery jugs during the war years, though I can only find one photo -

The jugs on the middle shelf are all smooth in the body, and my Ambrico and 778 are both the same design. The other two are both different, even to each other, so maybe the PS 203 is the clue?

Talking about mysterious numbers on CL jugs from the 40s...

 Electric Kettles / Jugs Cl_jug11

 Electric Kettles / Jugs Cl_jug12

The bottom numbers are the date of production 5-December-1947, but what does "FA 5194" stand for?

This is turning into a very interesting topic, isn't it !
You may be right about the PS 203 sunny ......
Oh my word how fantastic to see the date your jug was made teaandcoffee !!!!!
What strange letters and numbers scratch I think the number is 5197.
Is it possible that your jug is Temuka? As soon as I saw the glaze I thought it was Temuka. Also it's the same shape as that link to the Antique Electric Jugs for Temuka Beelectrics ........ so much to think about.
