Hard Copy
So just been looking at all this data and wondered if there was a real material copy of it or is it just a pile of ones and zeros?

Re: Hard Copy
Tim I think you'll have to specify which data.
The list that we used as the basis for our 1 - 881 Shape Guide was a copy of a copy Richard Quinn gave to the Auckland Museum. Richard's original was compiled from archival material he had and notes and drawings he made from objects he had. The material is presumably all now at the Portage Ceramics Heritage whatsit.
Using this list as a framework we have added photos of actual objects that either fill gaps in the list or replace drawings or black and white photos from the Auckland Museum. Behind each image there is a material object but by the time it makes it here it's all just bits and bytes.
The list of images we do and don't have is a Word document that at various times has become a material object when I've printed it out.

Re: Hard Copy
I think that'd depend on the history of each image. In some cases the photos may only exist in digital form. I almost never print photos and when I do it's via the printer attached to my pc. The person who took the photo may have printed it out on photographic paper or perhaps scanned it from an actual photo.
There may be people who prefer images they can hold and have printed off pictures mined from here.

Re: Hard Copy
WHY would you want a printed copy of the info Tim?
When it's all here at the click of a mouse pad ....... for anyone to find.
A digital resource for reference that's what this place is.
Hunters and Gatherers of nz pottery info come here.
I went to print off the Tableware Patterns Database,
but at 172 pages I changed my mind ...
as it would be out of date in no time ~_~

Re: Hard Copy
Is someone planning to write the next Crown Lynn book Tim?
The only person I can think of who would qualify to do that and could do it for the right reasons would be Tony.
With todays technology if people want info for their own personal reference they just download it from the net. I've met a couple of people who downloaded the marks from your site and know of many people who downloaded the kiwiana site for their personal use. Wish I had thought of doing that too! Probably the same thing has happened with the info gathered here and that's fine as there is no law against it.
Gosh you are such a dark horse teasing my brains Tim

Re: Hard Copy
excuse us a moment Tim - Ev I keep saying the only way I think a comprehensive publication on Crown Lynn could be researched is by someone based in Auckland, with a functional working relationship with and constant access to the Portage Ceramics Heritage Collection and Auckland Museum. It'd take months fulltime before any writing could begin. Tim has a proven track record of publishing, maintaining working relationships with a wide range of personality types, and earning the respect of potters and other informed people in the field. That's almost the polar opposite of me.
Anywho Tim if there are any images I've posted here that you want copies of I'd be happy to email you the highest resolution digital files I have of them. In a lot of cases you'd be welcome to have the objects themselves as I'm thinking it's time they were repatriated. (I keep thinking of Major Robley sitting in a tiny bedsit in London surrounded by his collection of mokomokai - I don't want to be the same, any longer). Some would be a good fit with your Colonial Salt Glaze project. Similarly you could email or PM the other members who've posted images that you'd like hard copies and ask for them. Ev could you let know who the images she's posted in the various galleries have come from as well.

Re: Hard Copy
Right, so I've thought about hard copy for a few days and it may be the way to go for the site to self-fund ......? Would have to look at all of the implications and legallities etc first, so may take quite a bit of research.
Re: Hard Copy
I think the hard copy means adequate back-up. What happens if all the computers of all our active members get wiped out by a super-virus? Do we have an effective way of rebuilding the galleries?
There'd also be an enormous job in getting publishable quality files of each image and getting the various permissions needed. It'd be like re-building the forum from scratch.
Huge amount of work - are we needing funding?

Re: Hard Copy
I get it now .... it took nearly a year but I now comprehend
There are no plans to pull the plug on this site....
endless bandwidth .. limited Gallery space
Unless the server host pulls the plug and I can't see that happening
If I go to Potters' Heaven... another Admin will have to fill my fingers.
